Mahon Point Shopping Centre’s Proposed Mixed Expansion

The Cork Business Association (CBA) welcomes today’s announcement and acknowledges the potential economic benefits of Mahon Point Shopping Centre’s proposed mixed-use expansion, including residential (251 homes), office (400+ jobs), and retail space. We particularly welcome the residential component, which will bolster the area’s current strength as an employment hub.
While supporting sustainable regional growth, the CBA stresses the importance of safeguarding Cork City Centre’s role as the region’s leading retail and hospitality destination. In this regard, only 18% of the development is allocated for comparison retail, with most of that (70%) potentially relating to two anchor units that would not ordinarily locate in a city, so this should minimise city centre impact.
The CBA will review the Retail Impact Assessment to ensure alignment with strategies protecting the city centre and advocate for the development contributions attached to any grant of permission being streamlined directly to fund improvements on Saint Patrick’s Street or other initiatives that strengthen the city retail core.
We look forward to engaging in the planning process, ensuring this proposal for growth benefits both local businesses and Cork’s long-term vibrancy. We encourage CBA members to attend Mahon Point’s information evening, open to members of the public, on July 8th between 4-7pm in Mahon Point’s community room, and we also welcome your feedback directly.
